Admiration of polished agate dates as far back as the Bronze Age, with the Indus Valley Civilisation having used them to create necklaces and bangles. Ornamental use of agate was also common in Ancient Greece, especially in jewellery and in the seal stones of Greek warriors.  Polished agate is still used today for ornamental and decorative purposes. Agate has a Mohs hardness rating of 6.5-7, which means it is resistant to scratching and chipping. It is a hard and durable gemstone, qualities that make it a good choice for jewellery and other ornamental objects that will be used often and subject to rough handling.
