Large Ammonite Slice
Ammonoids, commonly known as ammonites, are a group of extinct molluscs dating as far back as the Devonian period, 417 million years ago. They are what’s known as “index fossils”, meaning they are often used to determine the geological time periods of the rock layers they are found in. The term “ammonite” originates from Pliny the Elder referring to fossils from these animals as “ammonid cornua”, meaning “horns of Ammon”, because the Egyptian god Ammon (Amun) was typically depicted wearing rams’ horns, a shape resembling the ammonite fossil.
These genuine Ammonite Slices from Madagascar are from the Jurassic period, making them approximately 180 million years old. Each fossil slice is cut and beautifully polished to a high quality. Polished ammonites are striking when on display and make beautiful presents for fossil lovers of any age.
