NASA, the agency responsible for the US civilian space program & aerospace research, has been bringing the universe to our doorstep since 1958 - exploring other worlds, understanding our own.
The NASA insignia, nicknamed “the meatball”, is the primary of three official NASA logos. When the NASA seal was created in 1959 for official purposes, the executive secretary of NASA asked James Modarelli to designed an everyday logo for the agency. Sixteen years later, “the meatball” was retired and a new, more modern logo featuring just the letters “NASA” in a new red font nicknamed “the worm” was introduced. The worm was then retired in 1992 and the meatball was reintroduced as the official NASA logo.
The design incorporates references to different aspects of the missions of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The round shape of the insignia represents a planet. The stars represent space. The red V-shaped vector represents aeronautics and the circular orbit around the agency’s name represents space travel.
